2020 was a year of binge-watching and binge-reading! I quite possibly watched every show on Netflix this past year, and read around 60 books. So if you’re looking for a good show or a good book, here are (in my humble opinion) the best books and shows of 2020. I watched and read a lot of other great shows and books, but obviously only included ones that were published or aired in 2020!
Best Books of 2020
My favorite books published in 2020! I couldn’t possible put these into order because I loved them all and they were all so different. However, I think Untamed was my number one. I read a range of books so I feel like there is something for everyone on this list – from young adult to thriller! If you want more info on these books check out my On My Bookshelf series.
- HRH by Elizabeth Holmes
- The End of Her by Shari Lapena
- In Five Years by Rebecca Serle
- The Twin by Natasha Preston
- Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
- In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren
- Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid
- The Home Edit Life by Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin
- Majesty by Katharine McGee
- Untamed by Glennon Doyle
Best Shows of 2020
Unlike my books, these shows are in order! My top four was hard to narrow down, but I loved all of these shows. The top two I’m seriously considering rewatching (which I rarely do) even though I only finished them less than a week ago…
7. Love, Victor (Hulu)
I watched this one early on in quarantine and really loved it. It’s a spinoff of the movie Love, Simon, which I also enjoyed. The show follows Victor, who realizes he is gay, but doesn’t know how to navigate it within his more traditional family. He looks to Simon (who used to go to Victor’s new high school) for advice. It was heartwarming and well done!
6. The Undoing (HBO)
Everyone is talking about this one! It follows a wealthy couple when they become invoIved with a murder investigation. I will say the ending wasn’t that crazy (I kinda saw it coming), and my mom and I couldn’t get over the horrible detective work! Lol. But Nicole Kidman is amazing as always and Hugh Grant was great, too. Plus I love a mystery! So while it’s ending wasn’t my favorite, the rest of the episodes definitely made it worth the watch.
5. The Queen’s Gambit (Netflix)
If you haven’t watched this one yet, I don’t know what you’re doing. Seriously, go watch!! I know, I know. How could a show about chess be good? It is, trust me. Beth learns to play chess at the orphanage she grows up in, and the series follows her journey to become the best chess player in the world. I was hooked!
4. The Flight Attendant (HBO Max)
I loved this one! Kaley Cuoco is amazing. She plays a flight attendant (duh) named Cassie, who spends the night in a foreign country with a man who was on her flight. Cassie wakes up the next morning to find he’s been murdered. She barely remembers anything from the night before and her efforts to find out who killed him/prove her innocence are a wild ride. The whole plot was so fascinating and so were each of the characters. Plus George from Grey’s is in it!! Definitely would recommend if you love a thriller/mystery.
3. Never Have I Ever (Netflix)
I’m adding this one last minute and I can’t believe I forgot about it! Truly one of the funniest shows I’ve seen. Mindy Kaling, who I love, produced this one and it’s just so good. Even my 16 year old brother liked it! It follows Devi, and Indian-American teenager, and her high school experience about a year after the death of her father. It’s hilarious and emotional and heartwarming, and I can’t wait for season two. Maybe Mindy will make an appearance?
2. Bridgerton (Netflix)
Everyone and their mother (including mine!) is obsessed with this one. It’s like Gossip Girl except set in the 1800s in high-society London. With none other than Julie Andrews narrating. It’s produced by Shonda Rhimes and it was such a (welcome) departure from her usual series. Everything from the costumes, the love story, the MUSIC – so good. Apparently this series is based on a series of nine books so I’m fully expecting eight more seasons, and I will watch them all. And will probably read them all too!
1. The Wilds (Amazon Prime)
I started this one because my friend Fran shared about it on her stories (thanks Fran!). This is truly one of the best shows I have ever seen. A group of teenage girls headed on a retreat are in a plane crash, and end up stranded on an island. But little do they know they are actually part of an experiment. The actresses are AMAZING and the back story of each character is so compelling. Of course the season finale left me with about 5,000 questions – I NEED another season ASAP.
