Hello hello!
Back with another round-up of what I’ve been reading. There’s a little something for everyone in this post – from some good beach reads to anti-racism resources!
Recent Reads
Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
This book was amazing! It’s part love story and part self-discovery. It also thoughtfully and unapologetically addresses racism in America, how it compares to the idea of race in other countries, and how it differs for Black Americans and Non-Black Americans. I love Adichie, and her writing is beautiful. I can’t wait to read another book by her!
Not the Girl You Marry by Andie J. Christopher
Okay I’ll admit this one took me a minute to get into, but once I got into it I was hooked! Easy read, super cute, and I loved that it reversed the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days storyline. It also featured a Black woman as a main character, without letting that be the main plot-line. Perfect summer novel!
White Fragility by Robin Diangelo
This book blew my mind. Some it was information I had already learned (thank you to the WGST Department at TCU!), but a lot of it was new information for me. It really made me reflect on my role as a white woman in America, and helped me understand what I can do now and going forward to be actively anti-racist. If you are white and you believe Black Lives Matter (which you should), this is a must read. It can be uncomfortable, but as this book consistently points out, discomfort leads to growth.
The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren
This was a really fun story, and perfect to read at the pool/beach! The first 50 or so pages weren’t my favorite (the whole premise of this book is the best man and maid of honor take a free honeymoon after the bride, groom, and everyone else at the wedding suffer from horrible food-poisoning). Once that was part was over, it got good! It took be a bit to warm up to both of the main characters, but overall I really enjoyed the book.
Verity by Colleen Hoover
This is hands down the best thriller/suspense novel I have ever read. I love a good mystery and this one blew me away! It follows an author who agrees to finish a wildly popular author’s series after the original author (Verity) is injured in a car accident. When going through Verity’s notes, the new author finds a strange and disturbing autobiography. I could never have guessed the ending in a million years and I’m still trying to understand it. I don’t usually get ‘scared’ while reading, but this one was definitely creepy and disturbing at times. If you’re into thriller novels this one’s for you! Immediately after finishing I had to ship it off to my friend Sydney so we could discuss!
The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand
A couple is getting married in Nantucket, but the morning of the wedding the Maid of Honor is found dead. This was a pretty good whodunnit, and as usual almost everyone seems to have a possible motive. I love Elin Hilderbrand novels a lot – this was no exception! I will say it wasn’t the most mysterious because it was fairly easy to guess whodunnit at one point, haha. However, there were so many characters and moving parts that I was intrigued by the storylines even after I figured out who committed the murder!
