If you saw my Fall To-Do List, you know I want to read a few books this season that feel fall appropriate. And you all know how much I love thrillers, so I figured October is the perfect time to read them! I decided to compile some of my favorite thrillers, plus a few books I’m hoping to read this fall. I think there’s a couple fall-themed romance books on here, but most fall romances I saw were the cheesy Hallmark type (which I love in a movie, but not so much in a book), so mainly thrillers it is. If you’re look for a book to read this season, look no further!
Thrillers I’ve Read Previously
Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough
Also a Netflix series, though I preferred the book! This follows Louise who sleeps with a man she soon realizes is her new (married) boss. And then she becomes friends with his wife, but there’s something suspicious about their marriage. Definitely creepy and a little supernatural, it’s a perfect read for October!
Home Before Dark by Riley Sager
This one definitely falls into more of a horror category. I’m sure I’ve reviewed it on here before, but it’s about a woman who returns to the ‘haunted’ house she lived in as a child to discover what really happened there.
Verity by Colleen Hoover
One of my very favorite thrillers ever! It’s about an author, Lowen, who is offered an opportunity to write the remaining novels of a series by a famous author who was in an accident and is unable to write them herself. Lowen visits the home of this famous author and her husband, and things get creepy.
The Silent Patient by Michaelides
This one had (in my opinion) one of the best twists at the end. It’s about a psychiatrist who begins treating a woman who was accused of murdering her husband, and has not spoken a single word since. Another one of my favorite thrillers!
Any Shari Lapena Book
I love Lapena’s books! The only one I didn’t love is Not a Happy Family, but the rest are perfect suburban thrillers and fairly quick and easy to read. I would start with The Couple Next Door or A Stranger in the House.
On My List for this October
Some of these I’ve already checked off my list this month, and the rest just depend on what becomes available through my local library! Although I may have to purchase Liane Moriarty’s new book myself if I can’t get it from the library – there is quite a waitlist for this one.
The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson
This one is about a girl whose mother was accused of being a witch. The girl grows up in a very religious town, I’m not sure the year was mentioned but it feels very 1800s Salem-esque, where she is a bit of an outcast. One night she gets lost in the woods, and strange things start to happen. It’s very creepy and perfect for a Halloween read. It wasn’t too scary in my opinion, similar to Mexican Gothic (which, now that I think about it, would also be a great October read!).
The Whisper Man by Alex North
Okay there were a few parts of this that definitely freaked me out, so I couldn’t read it when I was home alone… I will say it was scarier in the first half and not as much in the second for me. It follows a recently widowed man and his son who move to a new town and into a creepy house (duh). This town is home to the Whisper Man, a serial killer who has been locked up for 20 years. I’ll leave the description at that, but I will say the ending left me with quite a few questions.
Tweet Cute by Emma Lord
If scary/thrillers aren’t your thing, this is for you! Very Hallmark-y, but very cute nonetheless. It’s definitely a YA romance through and through. It follows Pepper and Jack, two classmates whose parents own restaurants (one chain, one mom-and-pop) that get into it on Twitter over a sandwich recipe. The two eventually realize they’re talking to each other via these tweets, and I’m sure you can guess the rest. Super cute and takes place during fall in NYC. And the story revolves around grilled cheese and baked goods which feels very fall!
Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty
I love pretty much all Liane Moriarty books so this is the top of my list this fall! Here’s a little bit about the plot from Goodreads:
If your mother was missing, would you tell the police? Even if the most obvious suspect was your father?
This is the dilemma facing the four grown Delaney siblings.
The Delaneys are fixtures in their community. The parents, Stan and Joy, are the envy of all of their friends. They’re killers on the tennis court, and off it their chemistry is palpable. But after fifty years of marriage, they’ve finally sold their famed tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives. So why are Stan and Joy so miserable?
The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling
I am so excited to read this one after hearing great reviews from friends and a woman who works at a bookstore I like to go to! Despite being about a witch who casts a spell on her ex, I believe this one falls in the rom-com department rather than thriller. Sounds like a perfect October read for us romance fans!
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
After reading this one I’m not sure it would necessarily be a fall book, but the imagery of a ‘midnight library’ sure seems fall-like! I saw this recommended for fall reading lists, which is why I included it here. Even though it wasn’t directly fall related, I really loved it! It’s about a woman who ends up in the midnight library between life and death, where she gets to pick any of the infinite books on the shelves and live a different possible life. It was such a poignant novel about life’s regrets, different paths, and what it really means to be successful. I would definitely recommend it!
