I don’t know about y’all, but since I started college, there’s been quite a bit more business casual dressing up than I anticipated! Between formal business meetings for my sorority and my brief stint in the business school, I’ve found myself in the market for items like black work pants, nude pumps, and blazers! Items I don’t think I’d ever wear without a reason, but that I shockingly love wearing when I have an occasion to put them on. Plus, it can’t hurt to start building a work wardrobe before I’m actually a part of the adult working population, right?
I hear a lot of people say “I don’t have to wear business clothes… I’m in college” – and then those same people are scrambling day of to find an outfit appropriate for the job fair or an interview. Well friends, don’t worry – I’ve got you covered! From the most basic of basics, to the items you can buy for cheap to spice up you business wardrobe, I’ve rounded up all my favorite business casual essentials.
1. A Classic Pair of Pants
Oh my goodness, I cannot say enough good things about the Sloan Pant from Banana Republic. I bought a black pair on a whim because I knew they’d come in handy, and I fell in love. They’re the perfect fit and length, and they make your butt look good. Just saying. I recently bought a pair in gingham *insert heart eye emoji here* because I wear the black pair so often! I know they’re not the cheapest, but I think it’s worth it to invest a little in such a staple. Plus Banana Republic is always having a sale so it’s easy to grab these for a little bit less!
2. Nude or Black Heels
I don’t usually reach for super high heels because I’m already 5’7″ and to be totally honest, I look ridiculous walking in them, so these and these from Target are my favorites. If you’re not a heel gal at all, a nude or black pair of flats like these are also perfect!
3. Fun Blouses
My go to is a nice white blouse. My favorite is from Loft but you can even find some great options at Target or Old Navy. Just throw on your black pants and nude heels, and you’ve already got the perfect business casual look! To spice it up, I always search for cheaper blouses in different colors or styles. Business casual can still be trendy, ladies!!
4. Blazer
I personally haven’t found myself in desperate need of a blazer all that often, but I think they’re a great way to make a business outfit look polished. My mom let me steal a beautiful tweed blazer she wasn’t using, but I found a few options here and here that I think would be perfect if you’re on the hunt.
5. Skirts
Loft has the cutest business casual-appropriate skirts! This one is definitely on my list. The black skirt I wear most often is sold out, but here is a similar one from Loft. As long as they’re an appropriate length, skirts are my favorite in the warmer months.
6. Dresses
I surprisingly rarely wear dresses for business casual functions, but they’re probably the easiest option! Just put on some heels and tights and you’ve got a perfect look. I linked some of my favorites below!

I hope this was helpful to any girls like me who are looking to start or grow their professional wardrobe! In the photo above I’m wearing the Sloan Pant, a blouse from Loft (no longer available), and a pair of heels from Target (linked below and under the heels category). I also included a few more options below that I love!
