Before I even moved in to my first apartment, I knew I wanted a blue & white plate wall! I also knew I had to patient in collecting my blue and white plates. Finally, after just over a year in Dallas, my plate wall is up! It’s absolutely *perfect* and is the perfect addition to this large, previously blank wall, in my dining space.
Below, I’ll tell you all about how I did it, but you can also watch a video of the process here. 😊
Sourcing the Plates for a Blue & White Plate Wall
I sourced the plates from a variety of places: estate sales, antique shops, friends, and one purchase from One King’s Lane (the platter – I had been searching high and low, and honestly they had the best price!). For me, what makes the wall special is that these aren’t all brand new plates, and I didn’t buy them in a set. I spent time curating different plates I loved! I actually had some leftover that didn’t make it on the wall. In terms of sizing, make sure you get a variety! At one point I realized I was basically just collecting dinner plates and needed to reevaluate since I knew I wanted my plate wall to have more visual interest.
Arranging the Plates
Arranging took a lot of trial and error! First, I cleared space on my floor and just started moving plates around until I found something that looked good to me. I knew I wanted the more rectangular platter in the middle, so I used that as my anchor and built off of it. I had such a big space to work with, so I wasn’t too concerned with measurements, but if you are working with more limitations, I’d recommend taping off a section on the floor. Then you can arrange with in the same sized space to get a good sense of what can fit where.
Once I felt good about general placement, I messed around with the spacing between the plates and wrote down the distances I wanted between each one. Once I did that, I cut out papers roughly the size of each plate and arranged that on the wall to get a better sense of things. Then it was time to hang!
Hanging the Blue & White Plate Wall
I used these plate hangers from Amazon (just be sure to order the correct sizes!). They were a pain to get on to each plate – grab a friend to help if you can – but feel very secure. They also make these plate hangers that don’t show, if the little hooks bug you. Then it’s just like hanging a picture! I have this laser level thingy that I absolutely love and has been an integral part of all my hanging adventures. Without it my plates would not be evenly spaced or perfectly centered! I started with the platter, and then the four surrounding dinner plates, and then added in the smaller plates. Each time I hung a plate, I took a few steps back to make sure it was looking good. Then I measured between plates to make sure it matched up with my plan.

Honestly, creating this blue & white plate wall was a lot easier than I anticipated! It definitely requires a little patience, but the end result was well worth it! I absolutely love how it turned out – it’s exactly what I envisioned for the space.
