Happy Friday!!! I am so happy we’ve made it to the weekend! First off because this week has been quite a week. I’ve been crazy busy, between school, work, and some *new* work (I don’t even want to call it work because it’s so much fun!) that you’ll have all the deets on if you make it through this post! Secondly, my sweet cousin is getting married tomorrow and I am ecstatic! I will *fingers crossed* be sharing what I’m wearing to the wedding next week.
Anyways, I’m really excited to be getting an extra post up this week for you! I’m hoping two posts a week will happen more often these next few months – I have so much content I want to share with y’all!
Today’s topic is something I’m so excited and so passionate about – safer beauty!! I’m sure you’re all caught up on the latest in beauty trends, and one of the things being talked about most is safer beauty. At first, it kinda seemed like safe beauty was too ‘granola’ for me. You know what I mean, right? 😂 But being from California, I guess it was only a matter of time before I gave in!! And I promise you, it’s not just for the people who meditate everyday, eat vegan, and drink kale smoothies – safe beauty is for all of us.
Why Safe Beauty?
I try to look at what products I use the same way I look at what I eat – you need balance. Most of the time, you should fuel your body with foods that are good for you, but it’s okay to treat yourself every so often (Ben and Jerry’s, anyone?).
In terms of beauty, I think that the products we use most often should be ones we know are safe for our bodies. I could go on and on about how many crazy chemicals are in a lot of the products we use daily and how unsafe that is, but I don’t want to totally overwhelm you. I think it’s most important to understand that there are unsafe chemicals in most products we use and that in the U.S. they aren’t being properly regulated. They don’t even have to test these products before putting them on the shelves!! Chemicals like the ones used in so many products can cause cancer, and for someone with a long family history of cancer, that’s honestly really scary. Like I said, I could go on but if you want to learn more, just a quick google search will get you tons of info. Or if you just want a quick overview, here’s an article that I think is helpful in understanding what’s behind this movement.
I know so many things in this world are harmful and we’d all go crazy if we tried to get rid of every little thing, but I think we should at least try to do what we can in terms of taking care of our bodies.
In my journey to find safer beauty products, I came across Beautycounter. Their brand and mission is amazing, and their products are, as well! They have banned over 1,500 unsafe ingredients from their products. And the packaging (as y’all can see) is still aesthetically pleasing!! If you are looking for a new skincare or makeup line to try, or are just as passionate as I am about safer products, I would love for you to check out Beautycounter.
You don’t need to get rid of every potentially harmful product you own (that would cost you tons of time and money), but switching out where you can makes a huge difference. I’m still pretty new to this safer beauty movement, and right now I can’t even imagine giving up certain products like my Maybelline under eye concealer!! And that’s totally okay. It’s that treat yourself mentality – most of the time I’m using safe products, but sometimes you just gotta use what you know and love!! I certainly won’t be switching over completely, there will always be those products you swear by! That’s okay though.
The most exciting part of this all (remember the ‘work’ thing I said earlier?) is that I’ve decided to become a consultant for Beautycounter. I am just that passionate about what they stand for! I know that ‘consultant’ word can be scary, but I promise I’m not here to force anyone to spend money on products they don’t want. I am just so darn excited about the products and the company I want to share it with everyone! Beautycounter is very different from a lot of other companies that you can be a consultant for, which made me a lot more comfortable joining their team!
I just want to add that I promise to be completely, 100% honest with y’all when it comes to my opinions and experiences with these products (and anything else I share on the blog for that matter!).
Products I’m Using
I decided the best place for me to start is my daily skincare routine: face wash and moisturizers. I got the Nourishing Cream Cleanser to replace the face wash I was using before. I used the same moisturizer for day and night, but decided to switch that up with the Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion (it adjusts hydration and oxygenation levels depending on what your skin needs!) and the Nourishing Night Cream. Since my face is pretty dry, but also acne prone, I thought having a solid night cream and something that’s customizable to my skin would be perfect. I haven’t been using these products very long, but in a few weeks I’m planning on doing a full post updating you on my skin and how I feel about the products!
